However from my selfish personal preference where the world of music should revolve around my personal taste and everyone else be damned. The diversity of performance practice is only a means to the end. The search for the perfect performance that matches my personal taste more than every other competing performance. If that hypothetical "perfect performance" is found (which by the way perfection is probably more of a aspirational aim rather than actual achievable goal). Than every competition variation ofnthat perfect performance would be inferior to that hypothetical perfect performance. Performers experiment with playing the piece a different way should only be done when they haven't reach that goal and are trying to find ways to reach the optimal performance
if I write a piece of music. I may decide to play it differently because I consider the piece a work in progress and not satisfied with what I written or don't know what the optimal performance sounds like. However each subsequent performance as I work out what works and what doesn't, there should be less variation in performance as I reach closer and closer to the ideal/optimal/perfect performance.
