The Old Curiosity Shop is an absolute mess: it starts in the first person and deals with the titular curiosity shop, then turns third-person and goes in a different direction entirely and it has the most cartoonish Dickens villain. I believe it started as a weekly series in a magazine and in the middle turned into a monthly stand-alone serial. Joe is right about its shortcomings as well.
Barnaby Rudge is about the eighteenth-century anti-Catholic riots in England and actually isn't too bad once it gets going; unfortunately it takes half the book to get going and until then is pretty dull.
