but even though the third and fourth installments were less distinctive than the first two, they still took risks with their director hires (JJ Abrams making his first movie, Brad Bird making his first non-animated film) and let them bring at least some of their style to the table. Obviously though, in hindsight, JJ Abrams turned out to be the perfect person to hire for a franchise that wants a contemporary update without doing anything to alienate the fans.
