I'm generally the same way

Much more of an album guy than a comp guy, especially when it comes to my favorite artists. But with James, the general consensus is that even his strongest albums have some lame tracks (usually ballads). There's a few I might check out eventually like "The Payback", "Hot Pants" and "Hell" but some artists are just more well-suited to comps rather than albums and it seems like James is one of them. Also, the comps you mentioned are from the 80's and have basically been replaced by the ones I mentioned. The newer sets are longer and more logically organized (so they actually kinda seem like albums) and they obviously also have better sound. And you're probably already aware of this but the first few songs on the "Sex Machine" album are in fact studio cuts with a canned audience- the unedited versions are on the "Funk Power" comp I mentioned.
