I know that he supposedly shot Unforgiven exactly as it was written but that's his best loved movie. He's talked generally about not being afraid to tweak scripts but I don't know how much he does it vs. other directors. Most of his potboiler cop movies are things he did to make the studio happy so on at least some of them it was probably in his best interest to limit the amount of hassle he gave the studio if he wanted them to co-operate on his pet projects.
I've given my opinion on the "he makes movies too quickly" thing before. I mostly only remember seeing it as a criticism in that one article that you posted.

I haven't seen that and most people didn't like it, but alot fans with views on Eastwood similar to mine are less than enamored with the later era of his career anyway. I plan to finally get around to J. Edgar and Sully soon anyway, but I'm not exactly chomping at the bit to see Hereafter or Jersey Boys (which nobody seems to remember/care that he even made).
