Yeah, I think he's definitely leaving out all the dope he was doing at the time. And "times have changed"? The book was written between 1981 and 1985--I doubt the McMartin trial hysteria was any sort of age for child orgies. It's not from the 60s (like the Blind Faith cover) or the 70s, like how Derrick was always saying that nobody would have batted an eye at Woody Allen and Mariel Hemingway in Manhattan.
I mean, it's pretty similar to explanations for just about ANY child sexuality that you'll run into--"Doooops!!! Those were different times! It was supposed to symbolize innocence!!!" I'm pretty sure Scorpions have the same explanation for the Virgin Killer album cover (the image of which I'm NOT urging anyone to go look up!)
