Well that and there was a widely circulated image of him from when he was directing The Thin Red Line, unlike Thomas Pynchon (though I did find a close-up pic once of that one of him walking around with his kid.) I always thought that picture looked like a homeless Old West guy. Of course lots of pics of him from recent years made it onto the Internet anyways so that may be part of the reason he doesn't care anymore. Or because he's 73.
He was only 28 in that Badlands cameo but looking significantly older, I thought. Same age and same year as Scorsese in his Mean Streets cameo. He had trouble making Badlands actually--ran out of money and a bunch of people defected on him and left (part of the reason he had to do that cameo.) A far cry from having to edit down movies from 5 hour running times and cutting out actors entirely so that they don't want to work with him anymore!
I saw the TMZ thing. Which is weird because I normally stay pretty far away from TMZ.
