Yeah, I don't really agree that Lester's playing deteriorated after the war either. I guess I understand that opinion though- his solos became simpler and he tended to record fewer of the galloping pieces he did in his early Basie days so his soloing was less innovative and "bebop-esque" (have always thought Lester deserves partial credit for creating bebop). But I rank a lot of his post-war stuff as his best (partly because although I'm a big Lester fan, I'm only lukewarm on Basie). Actually also picked up "The Complete Aladdin Recordings", which covers the periods right before and right after the war (think there's overlap with the set you got- know it contains at least part of the Cole session) and is considered to be one of Young's best collections of recordings as a leader.
