In addition to the stuff mentioned here
, I just finished the Scott Pilgrim books, which I have very mixed feelings about. It's a good basic concept - dating as video game, emotional baggage manifested as physical adversaries - but I can't tell if it really gets any depth out of it. I can make arguments for how it's clever/weighty/resonant/powerful, but it might just be me forcing stuff out of the text that's not there. Ultimately, part of the problem is that there are too many characters and the main ones aren't developed enough - so when things happen that should be emotional, they come across as empty and unearned. But on the upside, the books are entertaining and sometimes quite funny, and the art is generally good. Maybe I just have some problems with comics as a medium.
I've read a decent amount of Steinbeck, but I've never even heard of that one. Reminds me that I owe East Of Eden a reread, especially now that I'm a California resident.
