I've read one or two Maigrets, which were fun and left little impression, and a few of his other novels, which tend to be darker explorations of sordid characters. I remember enjoying The Man Who Watched Trains Go By, and I loved The Strangers in the House, which is about an alcoholic out-of-work lawyer deciding to defend a friend of his estranged daughter's who gets charged with murder. Not because he's convinced that the guy's innocent but because he realizes that he really likes his daughter's sketchy friends.
