One interesting observation I've seen about it

is that it's a movie that had a significant influence on literary sci-fi by helping to develop the cyberpunk aesthetic. Most movie and TV sci-fi is well behind literary trends, often by decades (unless you're talking about strictly socio-political themes). Since somebody will probably point out 2001, that was cinematicly cutting edge and otherwise up to date but Clarke had dealt with those themes before.
