including the "Segregation now, segregation tomorrah, segregation forevah" thing. I don't know what the book is like but the movie is anti-racist re American Indians, although this does involve some obfuscation over the fact that alot of Cherokee backed the South because they owned slaves and not just as revenge for the trail of tears or something. It's not surprising that the source material is from a Confederate sympathizer but that's obviously not the angle Eastwood was really interested in. It's still one of the better Eastwood movies and better post-Wild Bunch Westerns. It also resulted in the Director's Guilde's "Eastwood Rule," that an actor can't have a director fired so that he can take over the position himself.
