What a goober. This reminds of me of when Kylie Minogue got diagnosed with cancer, some Australian politician called it a "national tragedy". I can't imagine any American president, even Obama, openly weeping over the death of some washed-up rock star and calling it a sad day for America. Especially as the Hip were, as several here have pointed out, a third-rate poor man's R.E.M. clone, a bar band that got lucky. Did the Hip ever have any non-Canadian fans? They were a weird local phenomenon, a band that was inexplicably wildly popular in their homeland but virtually unheard of in the entire rest of the world. Kind of like Garth Brooks in the U.S. of A., or any one of two dozen Australian bands that Trung could name.
