I don't think it has anything to do with his image but rather that his music was more firmly rooted in R&B (specifically New Orleans R&B) than those other artists. I mean, I've never really felt comfortable referring to him as a rock & roll musician. He's sort of in a category of his own and for the most part, his music is BLACKER (cue Benny) than the rest of those cats.
He wasn't mentioned as often as an influence as the early rock & rollers or electric blues musicians, no but he was definitely an influence. The Beatles absolutely loved him but were obviously more influenced by Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and The Everly Brothers.
