I've always kind of avoided him

I read a real creepy story of his ("The Game") in an edition of The Circus of Dr. Lao (a book you'd probably dig btw), and read a few children's books that we were assigned in school, but my parents hated him and thought he was sick. Which I'd say is a fair assessment - for the most part, he gives you an awfully ugly view of the world and humanity. I read in a review of a recent biography that most of his beloved classics were heavily edited and rewritten by others, though I don't know how true that is.
Anyway the greatest children's authors are Daniel Pinkwater and Tove Jansson.
