That leaves only a few legitimate candidates from this list, under my stated criteria: among them, Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Oasis, Eagles, Foreigner and Rush. The merits of these group's material is debatable; their level of prolonged success is not. But would it be accurate to say that they contributed *nothing* worthwhile, despite the longevity of their careers and the enormous popularity of their music? Or, more fairly, that the level of fame and success they achieved was entirely disproportionate to the overall appeal of their output? With the exception of Dave Matthews, I would argue no (and I don't even care for most of those artists personally).
What's beyond debate is that there are many, many better candidates for "Worst Band Ever" under this or any other criteria you care to name: Coldplay, Train, Nickelback, Creed, Maroon 5, all the usual critical punching bags. Obvious as they may be, there's no excuse for leaving them off of any list like this.
