Bringing back James' song was probably the most "I can't believe this is really happening right now" moment in the whole series. Like the sheer audacity sticking that in there took. People were already making memes out of the "James was always cool" line from the premier, so this was like Lynch (it's his birthday today btw) foreseeing all of that and going for the next level troll.
Yeah the scene with sarah watching the looping boxing match was very eerie. Took me more than a few moments to realize it was looping too.
These middle episodes have plenty of meat to them, but they're largely moving the characters around without advancing the plot much. Plus they've got less of the weird cryptic stuff that you have to twist your brain to figure out. So they were definitely the most "what exactly is the point of all this?" stretch of the series. (11 being the exception, that's definitely the highlight of the middle episodes).
from this point forward, the plot really starts to ramp up and the episodes all have some good freaky Lynch sequences. and the biggest FWWM references are just around the corner! Start jackin' yer dick duuuuuuuuude.
I watched all the bonus stuff on the bluray over the last couple days. you get 0 insights into what any of the story means or whatever (which was to be expected) but you DO get like 5 hours of fly-on-the-wall clips watching Lynch directing. Pretty cool stuff for filmmaking nerds.
NP: They Might Be Giants new album I Like Fun. It's a TMBG album. I'm liking it. Might be time for a TMBG binge, it's been a while since I had one of those.
