It's certainly a less extreme example than with Radiohead. I'm no fanboy of his (there are only 3 Sufjan albums I like enough that I still come back to on a semi-regular basis) and he's done plenty of stuff worth taking down a peg. It just seems to me like George is reacting to a reputation that he no longer really has.
Yeah, I miss the pipettes too. In retrospect they were probably always destined to be a flash in the pan, too many clashing personalities, too high concept of a group, not quite enough mainstream success, a majorly botched followup. But goddamn if that debut album wasn't basically perfect.
