The biggest thing it came down to was the arrangements. The vocals on the first album were all arranged so you could easily pick out each of the three singers once you knew their voices and they could easily be performed as a trio live, but on the second album they're just overdubbed to death and lack the diversity of vocal styles (Gwenno's sister sounds the same as her but way more mediocre). and then the music tries to go for an 80s vibe which just makes them sound way more generic. The songwriting is still kind of there though (in terms of hooks and general writing style I mean, the lyrics are lacking in any of the personality the debut had) which makes me feel like if they hadn't fallen apart and they followed up with another album in the same style as the debut they could have pulled it off pretty well. Alas, twas not to be.
Yeah Michigan is OK, but Illinois does everything the same but better so it pretty much makes it kind of redundant.
I'm not much of an Amnesiac fan tbh. It's the kind of album I can respect more than enjoy, whereas I can do both with Kid A. It's still better than King Of Limbs tho.
