The "variations on one recording" happens sometimes in other genres but is especially a problem with classical. A recording can be released, then re-released with simulated stereo, then re-released (after a deletion or otherwise) on a budget/"great-performances" label, then released on CD, then there's a 96kHz/20-bit remaster. Discogs will have all five releases with all five catalogue numbers on the same page, and tell you it was recorded in 1952, to boot. You can usually find individual performances on records from multiple sources, too.
