Yes, that's definitely a huge part of it I think. Makes it seem like it's still legitimately a cult film despite its popularity as opposed to something like "Blade Runner" which is obviously very unique but still basically in the classic sci-fi vein so it becomes harder to call it cult now that it's as popular as it is. But both of these examples do lend credence to the idea of a cult film basically shedding its cult status.

Agreed, which brings us back to the whole "Star Wars" connection. But yes, with cult films, it's all about that almost obsessive level of connection.
