I think the delirious blend of arthouse surrealism, 70's camp, and plup sci-fi is kind of glorious. It's no more stuck in its own era than Planet of the Apes. If you want a 70s sci-fi film that's truly weighted down in its era's dated banalities I'd point to Silent Running.
The plot kind of reminds me of Roger Zelazny's Lord of Light, and remember that in 1979 there was talk of turning that into a 50 Million Dollar movie and turning its sets into a theme park.
