Have you ever seen the silent one?

I think there are people who feel the way you do about the '59 version and like the '20s version better. It is in some ways, and it has the running time that I wish the sound version kept to, but I don't care for the two leads. Alot of the sets have a bigger feel and the sea battle was shot in open water and is superior, plus it's tied to one of my favorite shady Hollywood stories (although I'm not sure how true it is): To keep easy track of the extras and make sure they returned the costumes, the extras were required to hand in their street clothes when they got their costume. When they turned in their costume they got their clothes and their money. One of the ships sank and there were clothes left over after they fished everyone out and paid them, so they filmmakers had the clothes burned to cover up the presumed drownings. Then the extras showed up, having been rescued by a fishing boat, and had to be payed extra money.
Also, I think the pirate captain is named something like "Golthar the Terrible."
