Drop-D is a guitar tuning where the E-string is lowered to a D which bands often do cus it makes power chords easier (among other things).
I haven't paid one single piece of attention to their lyrics or any of their conceptual stuff. so that is a complete non-factor for me right now. I guess their artwork has a unique aesthetic that is distinctly them. that's always a nice quality to have. The occult-ish vibe is kinda neat, though they're hardly the only band to do that.
I completely missed out of the period of high-school when something like this could have actually had a chance of impacting me, but I remember classmates being pretty into them.
Yeah it was hearing more news about them trying to record a new album that made me curious about finally giving them a shot. Don't really get what's taken them so long, but whatever, I don't care too much either way. If they put out a new one I'll check it out, but I'm not holding my breath.

I was clicking around wikipedia and i discovered that apparently Tool's producer originally mixed Dream Theater's Scenes From A Memory but it was rejected by the band for not sounding epic enough. I'm kinda curious to hear that version now actually.
