Spielberg has not been on a good run lately. The Post was dull Oscar bait, and the BFG was insufferably obnoxious. Bridge of Spies was solid, but the Cohen bros wrote it so that might have helped things.
It's weird though how Ready Player One is downright incompetent at parts. Like even down to technical stuff. The music is weirdly quiet or non-existent at parts of the film where where you'd think it should be present. The acting is bad to the point where it's hard to believe that those were the best takes of certain lines. The film just looks fugly as hell too. Horrendous character designs. And then of course everything about the story that's from the book is every bit as mediocre and cliche'd as it was in the book. on the whole it's really weird how lifeless and flat and emotionless the movie feels. It bills itself as being a tribute to nostalgia and all that but it's so hollow and empty I can't imagine anybody getting much nostalgia from this. Seeing all these references to other stuff just becomes white noise after a while, like you're looking at a Where's Waldo picture from a distance and can't make out anything cus there's so much shit on the page.
After I saw the movie I turned to my friend and said "The same guy who made Jaws and Schindler's List made THAT" and he looked like he was about to throw up.
