All it means is that he let them wallow in their own cliched views of themselves. The idea of asking an audience what it likes is totally wrong. If your audience loves a scene, it is guaranteed to be terrible. Donít trust what viewers say they like. Give them what they need, which is almost always the opposite of what they want.
