Spielberg made Goeth much more more complex than he was in real life. He wasn't nearly as interesting a guy. Also, Rosenbaum is totally wrong about that piano sequence. That was brilliant. It addressed the question of how Germans, who considered themselves the pinnacle of Western Civilization would try to assuage their guilty with resorts to random erudition to assuage their guilt. The high point of German culture (Bach) with its low point. And all that is one in several seconds with a few lines.
But J Ro. was definitely right about the film coming out of Bush Sr.s rhetoric. As a result, whenever people talk about the film today they immediately mention how it is inextricably tied to Bush Sr. on the campaign trail. (jk)
