For me, TMR has an almost indefinable magic that no other Beefheart album has. No other album period, really, but I have heard a few that I feel similarly about- off the top of my head, I'd say "There's A Riot Goin' On" is a similar case (and no, not just because of the muddy production, though that's at least part of it). It's almost like there's a spiritual aspect to it, a presence (and I'm not a religious or even a spiritual person in the slightest). Part of this comes from the spoken interludes and house recordings, which almost make it seem like an aural documentary about a commune of artsy weirdos attempting to rewrite the rules of music. But there's more to it than that. Again, it's basically impossible to define but it's there- lots of hardcore fans feel the same way.
