That makes me and you the only ones who have really read Ellroy (who is a total troll in real life--thanks for almost ruining the Zodiac cast commentary track, dick!) White Jazz is absolutely the best of the "LA Quartet" - L. A. Confidential, perversely, may actually be the worst. Remember how the movie of The Godfather deleted precisely everything about the story that was stupid or trite or salacious and pared it down perfectly for the movie? Ellroy's L. A. Confidential has that problem times four. Some of the places the plot of the book went had my jaw dropping through the floor. If they won the screenwriting Oscar in 1997 by God did they absolutely deserve it--and the movie is still fairly complicated!!
(That said, Ellroy, dick though he is, is absolutely a far superior writer to Mario Puzo!)
