But S&M is by definition painful, and it's abnormal to enjoy pain. It might be more akin to being ####ed in the ass by a shemale. I guess there might be some pain involved but even though it goes against nature/tonality I can see the appeal. Unpleasantness is incidental if you're getting something greater out of it.
The first Schoenberg quartet is pretty bad. When I was listening to that disc the work would put me out of sorts and I was distractible and anhedonic when playing anything further. The second quartet starts crappy but the finale is great and legitimately beautiful.
The third and fourth are twelve-tone but are in recognizable forms. There's even what is clearly sonata form (modified, of course, considering the key dynamics) and themes and great melodies everywhere. One never misses tonality.
