That good high-school (actually high-school, and middle-school, and elementary-school -- we met in third grade) buddy went back to get his master's with the GI bill and got a good (and well-paying) job that he loves in history. I was planning to go in a direction like that but mental problems intervened. I guess it was kind of a blessing that it happened so early -- first semester, got bad in the second -- so I didn't have all that wasted work and money sunk into it. Anyway this is all to say that humanities degrees can lead to a good career. I guess it helps to be in the DC area.
