Is that people recommend jazz albums when they are trying to move into serious artistic statements instead of when jazz was a popular entertainment.
Miles Davis Kind Of Blue is considered the go-to jazz album to listen to first. However it's a jazz album using an ancient modal system that really only had predominance in western music in the renaissance era.
Of course it's not unlistenable or anything like that but it's seems like an esoteric entry point to jazz music as modal scales aren't common in pop music or classical music prior to the late romantic to modern era even if it is part of the jazz canon. If it's a first listen, for every people who were blown away, there are just as many people who think I don't get it and hence jazz in totality and move on.
It seems to me that recommending people to start with ragtime Scott Joplin and moving forward makes more sense but whatever.
