One difference between classical and pop/rock is that dabbling is more valuable in the latter. I understand deciding to listen to every Haydn symphonies, since there's only so many composers from that time with surviving oeuvres, and Haydn's worse symphonies are likely to still be better than the works of an obscure mostly forgotten composer.
But pop/rock is littered with artists who got it together only for one great album, or great artists who put out a lot of mediocrities later in their careers. So listening to the whole Yes discography is going to be less valuable than listening to Yes's best-regarded handful of albums and then sampling some less-well-known stuff from the same period.
