They uploaded this to youtube last night and while I know all the songs already I haven't spun much by the Lips in a while so I thought I'd give it a go. Damn these guys have such an unbelievable number of great songs. This comp would make a great intro to the band to someone since there are so many great songs here but even still it barely scratches the surface of the band's catalogue. It also nicely goes through most of the bands eras in order (starting with Hit To Death) so it gives a great snapshot of their development over the years too. the 3rd disc has a bunch of non-album stuff on it too which is a nice bonus so this is worth checking out even if you already have all the albums.
Kanye West - Ye
Nice return to form here. The last album was a bloated mess, this one is tight and lyrical with almost no embarrassing cringe-lord moments. It's a concept album (EP really) about how being bipolar sucks. Good job Kanye.
Arctic Monkeys - Tranquillity Base Hotel and Casino
A bit of a weird album. The singer sings lounge-songs about a space station and it doesn't sound like anything the band has done before. A neat album. Not much replay value though.
Grateful Dead - The Movie Soundtrack
this is 5 discs but i've only heard the first 3 so far. It's among the best Dead I've heard to date. They really sequenced these discs to give you the full Dead experience with something representing all the bands different sides on each disc so each one on it's own plays as a great independent album. That's really cool. It's got one exemplary version of a Dead classic after another
Queen - Hot Space
I decided to check out late-era Queen albums because I was curious and only knew this era from compilations.
Sucks monster dong. I've never heard an album that sounds simultaneously both this gay and this dorky. Thankfully side 2 redeems things a little and Under Pressure is here and that song is great, but damn this album suuuucks.
Queen - Works
The hits are the best songs. "radio gaga" isnt one of their better hits but its ok. but why is the album version of I want To Break Free edited from the single version? Album versions should be full length! I gotta listen to a comp for the better version of that song. "Back To humans" is an embarrassment.
Queen - A Kind Of Magic
A decent record. The non hits are actually good on this one mostly.
Queen - The Miracle
Oooh this one blows. I have a weird fondness for the title track. but most of this is really bad.
Queen - Innuendo
wtf this album rules? Like it might actually be the best album they ever did. All the hits are among their best ever, most of the album tracks are better than the hits off of the last couple albums, and there are NO DUDS which is practically unheard of for a Queen album. Maybe freddie shoulda died more often if thats what it took to motivate him to make something this good (I kid). I'm happy that looking into these late-era Queen albums at least had a reward at the end.
Conclusions: yep the comp was still better. But I'm glad I finally heard Innuendo in full at least
