also it's Kinda weird that they called it volume one since it covers so much of their career but compilation logic rarely makes sense anyway, so whatever.
I posted this on twitter but I'm going to just copy it over here:
I remember back in the early days of the online music community where rock fans were obsessed with finding out who "The Next Pink Floyd" would be, (usually with Radiohead as the main candidate) and I think it's since become clear to me that the answer was right there in front of them the whole time. It was The Flaming Lips!
-early crazy psych period,
-era that most people tend to overlook (pre-Darkside Floyd, pre-Drozd Lips)
-mysterious early frontmen and guitarists that fans are often curious about
-Some really interesting lineup changes over the years
-play cacophonous and noisy music but are also capable of supreme beauty
-love concept albums
-dabble in lots of different styles of music while excelling in a sound that is uniquely them
-done movie soundtracks both for their own movie projects and for others
-made music to sync to a movie like the wizard of oz (whether on accident or on purpose)
-have fluke pop hits
-masterful musicians in their fields (most notably Gilmour & Drozd),
-striking iconic album artwork
-silly names for things
-Did prog epics
-lyrics about death, and space
-epic flashy stage shows with tons of props and effects
-stunning artistic development and transformation over their career
Heck the Lips went beyond Floyd in a lot of ways: Pink Floyd always chickened out with their crazy psychedelic ideas and gave it a cynical edge, but the Lips embrace it wholeheartedly.
Floyd couldn't see many of their crazy ideas through (like their household objects project) but the Lips see EVERY crazy idea through (Zaireeka for instance).
Floyd named their albums "Atom Heart Mother" and "Ummugumma", The Flaming Lips named their albums "Transmissions From The Satellite Heart" and "Heady Fwends" (and so on). also The Lips didn't breakup while they were at their peak they've just kept being great.
