BELO HORIZONTE (27/7/2021) – Emater de Minas Gerais carried out an emergency survey of the damage suffered by coffee plantations, caused by the frost of the last week. Of the municipalities that participated in the survey, 77.8% are in the South of Minas and 21% are located in the Triângulo Mineiro and Alto Paranaíba regions.
According to the report, it is estimated that the frost affected approximately 156.3 thousand hectares, which corresponds to 17.2% of the area occupied by coffee in the region covered by the survey. Emater technicians in all municipalities affected by low temperatures are providing guidance and assistance to rural producers to deal with the negative impacts of frost, especially for producers whose activity has bank financing, accompanied by insurance in case of bad weather. The survey carried out by Emater-MG shows that around 9,500 producers had coffee growing areas affected by frost. And approximately half of these coffee growers will need to resort to credit or rural insurance to deal with the damage found.
The CEO of Emater de Minas Gerais, Otávio Maia, informed that the company is united with other bodies and entities linked to agriculture, in its efforts to seek support for all rural producers. Emater-MG is carrying out a more in-depth survey of the impact of frosts on crops, especially coffee. This Tuesday, July 27, research was also started on the damage to other crops, such as vegetables and fruits.
According to Otávio Maia, joint actions will be promoted to help producers overcome this difficult situation caused by the cold wave in the state: "We are already available to provide the necessary reports, both for the mayors to decree a state of calamity, and also for the farmers to be supported in the release of rural insurance and financing for the recovery of crops. In addition, the technicians are providing all the guidelines, in a task force, so that producers can resume their activities, especially in coffee, which accounts for most of the Gross Domestic Product of agriculture in the State of Minas”, said Maia.
Last Friday, July 23, the president of Emater-MG was in Alfenas, meeting with the minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Tereza Cristina, and the state secretary of Agriculture, Ana Maria Valentini, as well as representatives of the Company Supply National (Conab) and other entities and parliamentarians linked to the agricultural sector. The group took a close look at the damage to crops affected by the frost and discussed emergency actions to help producers overcome the situation they had experienced.
For the purpose of requesting insurance and specific rural credit against the effects of frost, the main guideline at the moment is that producers carry out a survey of the affected areas on their properties, including photographic records, which will be useful in the preparation of reports on losses of production.
new frosts
Rural producers in Minas should prepare for a new wave of low temperatures and frost formation starting this Wednesday (28/7). The information comes from the Meteorology and Water Resources System of Minas Gerais (SIMGE), from the Minas Gerais Water Management Institute (IGAM). According to the warning, the intense cold wave will affect more intensely the southern regions of Minas, Triângulo Mineiro, central/south of the Central and Metropolitan, West, Campo das Vertentes and Zona da Mata regions.
The forecast is that 541 municipalities in Minas Gerais register temperatures from 10ºC to negative temperatures, with moderate to severe frost formation. The weather forecast models point to the occurrence of negative temperatures in general in the south of Minas and Campo das Vertentes in the early morning hours of the 30th and 31st of July, which should cause frost of medium to strong intensity in these mesoregions.
“Frost should also be observed in areas of the Triângulo Mineiro, south of the Northwest and Central region, between the 29th and 31st of July. The 29th is the driest day within the proposed period of this notice, increasing the thermal amplitude and making the later dawn (07/30) the coldest, with lows expected to be below 7°C in the Metropolitan mesoregion , including in the capital Belo Horizonte and the Metropolitan Region”, informs the SIMGE meteorological alert.
Primer
Emater-MG prepared a booklet for producers affected by frost. One of the main recommendations, at this time of emergency, is to find out if the affected area is covered by agricultural insurance and not carry out any intervention in the field before the technical expertise of a professional qualified to assess the damage.
To facilitate the survey of damages, it is interesting to draw up a sketch (drawing), if possible with georeferenced information on the fields and affected areas, as well as photographic records, preferably with a date. At the moment, it is not recommended to carry out any cultural treatment, such as pruning, reception or plant eradication.
For more information, producers can contact Emater's local office in their municipality or contact them via telephones or e-mails, available on the company's website: www.emater.mg.gov.br .
