Born Renee Diane Kushner, her original intent (when she signed with ATCO) was to be billed as Renay Diane, modeling her name to the styling of Ann Margaret by simply dropping her last name. She chose the R-E-N-A-Y spelling to avoid her name being mispronounced as REE-NEE, as she had sometimes been called before then.
When ATCO pressed her first record in 1962 ("Little White Lies"), they got her billing backwards on the label, as Diane Renay. She could have changed it but she decided to leave it that way.
