Re: Shakespeare plays by popularity
I don't think it's surprising that the average American doesn't care much about English history. But also, large casts could be an obstacle to performance (assuming the histories do on average have bigger casts, which I haven't substantiated).
Anecdotally, I'm pretty sure New York's Shakespeare In The Park does one comedy and one tragedy each summer, but no histories. I think when laypeople think "Shakespeare" they're more likely to think of the first two categories, even though serious Shakespeareans think highly of the histories.
