Thanks for the reminder re: "All Gates Open"
Pretty sure it's already on my Amazon wishlist but if it's out, I'll definitely need to pick it up. Familiarizing yourself w/ Can's discography seems like a good idea if you're gonna read it but I wouldn't stop at the studio albums- without hearing their more notable bootlegs, you're not getting the whole story. Can arguably has better bootlegs than any other artist. My personal favorite is "Ogat Ogam" (1/2 hr studio jam from the "Tago Mago" sessions including a brief embryonic "Halleluwah") but of the live bootlegs, it's all about "Paris 1973", a killer full 1 1/2 hr show, that ranks alongside the best live available.
Here's how I'd rank the Can releases I've heard:
Paris 12 May 1973
Live Box (1971-1977)
The Lost Tapes
Future Days & Past Nights
Soon Over Babaluma
The Peel Sessions
Damo Suzuki's Last Show: Edinburgh August 25, 1973
Out of Reach
