Yep, I'm a bigger fan of Louie's late stuff than most folks
Though I'd agree with the general consensus that his mid-period in the 40's was his peak (the "Ain't Misbehavin"/"Black & Blue"/"Stardust"/"Lazy River" era), I love that late stuff too. Can completely understand why folks find it shmaltzy but I love it- Louie is my favorite singer and his abilities in that department arguably aged like a fine wine. "What A Wonderful World" is like "Imagine"- totally get why some find it sappy but it gets me every time. Louie was like Ray Charles- able to use the syrupy backdrop as a means for true transcendence. And no, I haven't smoked yet today.
