I like M:I as a De Palma film, I think he works the usual Hitchcock tricks into it pretty nicely, but I guess it's a fairly inconsequential movie today (the current M:I movies are really using M:I 3 as a starting point.)
The hilarious thing about the special effects you're referencing is that if you were alive in 1996 that shot of Cruise being blown through the air (kind of a spoiler isn't it?) was UNAVOIDABLE. There were three images that played on TV over and over and over in summer 1996: that, the tornado destroying that barn in Twister, and the White House blowing up in Independence Day.
I guess the De Palma films you saw between 1973 and 1996 didn't include The Bonfire Of The Vanities, then. That thing's just about a zero for sure.
