Sanjuro has more going on that people tend to give it credit for.

The cynical/subversive stuff in Sanjuro is more distinctively Japanese than Yojimbo. It's still an accessible movie without getting all of the subtext but watching it with the commentary (which is only on the second Criterion release, not the original one) fills in alot of that. Btw it's based on the same book as Kill!, another samurai movie with a Criterion release. Sanjuro throws out the first half of the novel and simplifies the plot. It's not obvious that it's "the same story" as opposed to two stories from the same genre that utilize some common tropes, but anyone who likes on should see the other.
