Not familiar w/ Grandaddy

but sampling "The Sophtware Slump" and it sounds pretty cool, though it reminds me more of "cosmic Americana" (didn't know this was even a subgenre term but I guess it works) groups like The Flaming Lips, Sparklehorse and Mercury Rev than Callahan's stuff (though maybe Lyle has solo material that sounds more like Callahan?).
Anyway, it helps one's appreciation of Callahan's songs to be familiar with his life and sense of humor but at the same time, I've loved his crude, low brow cartoons since I was a kid and was still shocked by the vulnerability and emotional depth of the songs. Damn catchy too- many have been stuck in my head for days.
