And yeah the "Based On The TV series created by Bruce Geller!" credit at the start kind of sticks out nowadays, when the films have pretty much eclipsed the series in popular awareness. I wonder if JJ got involved with half an eye on bringing it back to tv.
I used to watch the series as a kid and always thought it was a shame they didn't at least bring back Martin Landau as the hilariously named Rollin Hand. But apparently the original cast hated the films because of what they did to Jim Phelps.
The first Jack Reacher might be peak Cruise vanity project, even though it's decent. There's this bit where he's hanging around in his apartment with his shirt off, awkwardly posing in this way where the light from the door shows off his pecs.
And then later there's a bit where he, right around the point his face started developing a puffy quality that betrays his middle ages, is having a drink in a bar on his own and this early 20's girl starts hitting on him.
Another funny thing about the M:Is is how they've spent the last several films desperately trying to establish Ethan Hunt as some kind of character with an identity beyond just being a Tom Cruise action alter ego.
As of the latest one they've finally *almost* managed to pull it off, but not really.
