That type of sacred cow slaughter is sort of expected from guys like Bangs and Chritgau who, like you touched on, were basically the original contrary hipsters. I don't think any of the major corporate rock rags have had any guys like that on their staff (or even featured as freelance writers) for decades. Guess those types are only on sites like Pitchfork these days. So yeah, it is somewhat interesting that the icons would regularly get slammed in the major publications. Especially since back then record sales actually *mattered*.
Yeah Lennon had a weirdly relationship with RS but did he and Wenner have a falling out over the latter going against their agreement and publishing Lennon's RS interviews as a book or something like that?
