He was a "blond satan" in the novel (I like that "satan" was lowercased. Satan is Real, dammit!) which was a notable difference. Wasn't his loathing of his partner Archer more pronounced in the book, or am I misremembering that? Someone wrote a prequel novel Spade & Archer BTW.
Did Wilmer have a perfumed hankie in the other two versions? Ebert pointed that out as the chief gay indicator in the 1941 version.
Didn't know Satan Met A Lady was a parody.
