I was pleased when one of my friends recently told me that he watched it with his 5 and 7 year old children and they were absolutely riveted by it.

That was normal in classic Hollywood. It's in Rear Window too.
Why didn't you think Rear Window would hold up under repeated viewings? Do you just think that about mystery/thrillers in general? Honestly I don't remember ever not knowing how it ends. It's probably one of the many classic movies my parents spoiled for me a million times before I ever actually saw it. My Grandman lived with us and rewatched the same hand full of movies all the time and couldn't remember the ending from viewing because she suffered from senile dementia, always thought Stewart was paranoid and that the guy was actually going to turn out to be innocent.
Since you seem way more interested in the mystery for its own sake then the exploration of voyeurism I'm not sure if you're going to be in love with Vertigo, but hopefully I turn out to be wrong.
