Buckingham's Fairlight CMI use also leads to those goofy bounce-off-the-speakers vocal bits, like in "You & I Part II" or "Big Love" which remind me of that godawful thing Kate Bush did on Hounds Of Love with all the terrible chopped up samples, that "Waking The Witch" or whatever it was.
I wasn't really thinking of the drums. Either way I do think Rundgren was more inventive than Buckingham was.
I certainly did not know there were modern bands going for the TITN-type sound...that's, uh, fascinating to me. I mean, I know there's lots of 80s retro-ism but I thought it was more Cure/Smiths/Depeche Mode type stuff than anyone trying to do their own Tango in The Night. But I don't listen to that much modern music, so, uh, you tell me.
