Maybe whatever source Paul is thinking of

just meant that those werenn't projects initiated by him or one of his close collaborators. Cape Fear just seems like something he made as an obligatory money maker, but remember how he traded Schindler's List to Spielberg for it? Schindler's List was going not happen even if neither of them directed it, but it ended up as a personal project for Spielberg. But in contrast Mean Streets wouldn't have happened without Scorsese, it was his project. And De Niro initiated Raging Bull, it wasn't a project the studio was shopping around for somebody to direct. The Aviator seems like a personal project, but it's easy to believe that it's just something he stepped into because he needed to make a movie and that one looked like a good choice.
