Yeah and I'll admit that I'm your typical snobby jazz fan

who's basically unfamiliar with/uninterested in anything released after the 70's. I'll gladly admit that but I've also never really fallen into the Ken Burns-baited trap of simply assuming that there have been *no* developments in the music since the advent of fusion. But yeah, without context, I feel like my reaction to that Ronin album is probably fairly typical of my breed of jazz fan who pretty much never bothers even sampling any jazz albums released after '79. I'll also point out that while I know better than to lump all European jazz together, it would probably help if I was more familiar with European jazz that preceded ECM as well, but aside from maybe Tubby Hayes (who I've barely listened to) and a couple others, most of the Euro jazz I've heard is a bit too "academic" (for lack of a better term) for my taste and I guess I could say the same about that Ronin album. Not confined to Euro jazz either- basically feel the same about the MJQ and a good amount of cool jazz as well (Brubeck gets a pass because of the material and Paul Desmond).
